A New Era of Brotherhood: Strengthening Azerbaijan-Pakistan Relations

The historic visit of President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan has concluded, leaving behind a legacy of strengthened bonds and new horizons of cooperation. As the Founder President of the Pakistan-Azerbaijan Alumni Association (PAAA), a Global Climate Youth Advocate, and President of the Belt and Road Initiative for Sustainable Development (BRISD), I am honored to witness this significant chapter in the enduring friendship between our two nations.

The visit commenced with a grand reception at the Pakistan Air Force Base Nur Khan, where President Aliyev was greeted with a guard of honor and a display of national pride. This ceremonial welcome, adorned with the flags of Azerbaijan and Pakistan, set the tone for the profound and fruitful engagements that followed.

One of the most notable outcomes of President Aliyev’s visit was the agreement between Pakistan and Azerbaijan to elevate their bilateral investment level to $2 billion. This commitment, as expressed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a joint press conference, is a testament to the immense potential for mutual growth and development. The Prime Minister articulated hopes that this initial figure would merely be the beginning, with expectations of signing substantial agreements during his upcoming visit to Azerbaijan in November.

Prime Minister Sharif’s words resonate deeply with the sentiments of our nations’ youth and citizens. «The current bilateral investment volume of less than $100 million does not reflect the strength of our brotherhood and friendship,» he remarked, highlighting the necessity to bridge this gap through joint investments in mutually beneficial projects. This spirit of collaboration is not only a reflection of our shared values but also a strategic move towards economic prosperity.

In the backdrop of these developments, it is crucial to acknowledge the unwavering support that both countries have extended to each other on pivotal issues. Pakistan has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s stance during its thirty-year occupation, while Azerbaijan has been a steadfast ally in advocating for the rights of Kashmiris. This mutual respect and support underscore the deep-rooted brotherhood that defines our relations.

President Aliyev’s visit also included a tour of the National Aerospace Science and Technology Park in Islamabad, showcasing Pakistan’s advancements and potential for collaboration in the defense sector. Such interactions open new avenues for strategic partnerships, enhancing our nations’ capabilities and fostering innovation.

President Asif Ali Zardari hosted a state reception in honor of President Aliyev, highlighting the high level of political relations between our countries. President Zardari commended the constant support Pakistan and Azerbaijan have extended to each other. He congratulated President Aliyev on Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29 and accepted the invitation to attend the summit, emphasizing its significance for developing countries, including Pakistan. President Zardari also noted the beautification of Baku as an inspiring model for urban development in Pakistan.

Reflecting on the deep-rooted relationship between our nations, founded on true brotherhood, trust, and sincerity, it is time to take this bond further by expanding into billion-dollar businesses and enhancing people-to-people contact, especially youth-to-youth and climate diplomacy this year. Pakistan and Azerbaijan should declare the Year of Climate Diplomacy Brotherhood ahead of COP29 in Baku in November 2024. The friendship between youth leaders and the young generation is paramount to sustaining our relations and making them even stronger. Today’s youth are the present leaders, active in all spheres, and there is a need for close collaboration and friendship based on mutual trust and respect. The leadership of both countries may also advise and promote among the youth to be close friends as one nation. The future is bright for our collaboration!

The climate summit COP29, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku, stands as a significant milestone for both our nations. Prime Minister Sharif expressed confidence that under President Aliyev’s leadership, COP29 will effectively address the climate-related challenges faced by developing countries, including Pakistan. As a Global Climate Youth Advocate, I see this summit as a pivotal opportunity to bring forth the voices of the youth and advocate for sustainable solutions to combat climate change.

The beautification of Baku, which has inspired Pakistan to adopt similar urban development models, is a testament to Azerbaijan’s progress and vision. Such exchanges of ideas and best practices further cement our bond, fostering a spirit of learning and growth.

The heartfelt remarks of President Aliyev during his visit encapsulate the essence of our relationship. «The brotherhood between our countries is based on deep feelings between the people of the two sides,» he stated. This profound connection, built on mutual respect and shared aspirations, is indeed a valuable asset. President Aliyev’s unwavering support for the rights of Kashmiris and his commitment to international law and justice resonate with the principles that both our nations uphold.

As President Aliyev’s visit draws to a close, the spirit of brotherhood and collaboration that it has rekindled will continue to inspire and guide us. The discussions on energy, connectivity, infrastructure, and defense industry projects, along with the commitment to joint investments, pave the way for a future where Azerbaijan and Pakistan thrive together.

The state visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Pakistan has not only reinforced our diplomatic relations but has also opened new chapters of economic and strategic cooperation. As we look forward to the outcomes of COP29 and the upcoming agreements, the bond between our nations stands strong, rooted in friendship, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a prosperous future. Together, as brothers, now and forever, we will continue to support each other and work towards a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.
